Day 272 of 365 Days of Being Thankful
Today I am thankful for the happy memory that Dan reminded me of. He is away camping by himself. His brother Larry was supposed to go with him but Larry got sick and couldn't go. In the summer they were supposed to go together but Dan got sick!! So Dan decided to go alone. He is not far from Olya's college campus so yesterday he picked her up and they went train watching and out to a Chinese buffet for dinner!!Dan has a scanner and Olya loves using the scanner for trains. I think Olya likes to go train watching!! When Dan called me this morning, he told me that he doesn't need an alarm clock because there are chickens somewhere close by the campground that wake him up early every morning. When I was a kid, 5 and 10 cent stores like Grants and Woolworths use to sell baby ducks and chickens near Easter. I don't think any of those stores exist today! The baby chicks and ducklings were dyed pink, green, purple, orange, blue, and yellow. They all looked so cute and so colorful running around their glass enclosures in the stores! No child could resist wanting one or two or three of them!
Now we know it is a form of animal abuse and a health hazard. Anyway, I think most of the poor animals didn't survive after they were purchased. We got the cutest baby chick who grew up to be a rooster!! We took good care of the baby chick, it followed us everywhere around the neighborhood! He grew and grew! The first day that he cock a doodle dooed at sunrise was the last day he lived with us!! My dad took him to a close-by farm that day!! We never saw our chicken again. My dad was a really kind person so I think he really took the rooster to the farm but I always wondered if my mother just disposed of it! My friend down the street had a baby duck that grew up to be a huge duck. That duck lived with her family until it died of old age!! I guess he wasn't cock a doodle dooing at sunrise like our rooster!!
