Day 12 of being thankful

Today I am grateful that Olivia got her grades from college and they were excellent! Olivia just got her grades from the courses she took in the Fall.  She received two As! I'd like her to stay in college but she really wants to do hair and make-up.  Olivia is naturally great at doing hair and make-up.
Olivia did her cousin Erica's eye make-up

I think it is in her Ukrainian blood to be good at hair and make-up. When Dan and I were in Ukraine, I could not stop staring at the women.  They were all so beautiful.  I don't think I encountered even one woman that I wouldn't have said was at the very least, pretty! Most were drop dead gorgeous. The teachers at Olya's school were beautiful enough to be models. When Dan stayed in Ukraine to finish the paperwork to adopt Olya, he took her to a restaurant in the hotel he was staying in.  It actually was the only restaurant and hotel in town. The first floor was a small market, the second floor was the restaurant, and the third floor was the hotel.  The waitress was young and very pretty.  Olya drew pictures of her as a princess.  No one in the restaurant spoke any English.  When Dan wanted to order something for dinner, he would say buc, buc, cluck, cluck and flaps his arms like wings. Then the waitress knew he wanted  a chicken dish!  When he wanted beef, he would say mooooo, mooo, moo. I swear this is a true story. It's amazing how easily it is to communicate with hand motions, etc, food is a powerful motivator!  Now, people have translators on their cell phones so it must be easier.  We had a book with English and Ukrainian words, so in a pinch, we would pull it out and show the server what we wanted.  In a food market, there were always helpful people who somehow knew we were Americans and offered to help us.  Most Ukrainians speak some English. And they were very kind about trying to help us wherever we went.  Dan stood out like a sore thumb with his shoes.  They had tassels on them and most Ukrainians, especially adult males,
found that funny. Their male shoes were just plain and square toes. We would see people looking at his shoes, conversing to each other, even pointing and then chuckling.  I guess it seemed odd to them.
