Day 122 of 365 Days of Being Grateful

Today I am thankful that I got to pick up Olivia from Beauty School.  It seems as if Olivia talks more with me when we are in the car.  I heard all about her exciting day at cosmetology school.  She  was chatting with a student in the other cosmetology class and found out that this other student use to date Olivia's  current boyfriend.  Olivia didn't mention that she is dating him now. Olivia didn't feel well this morning, she had a really bad sore throat.  Dan took her to the doctor and she went to school later.  We have to wait until tomorrow for the results of the strep test.
Her beauty school is about 40 minutes from where we live.  I use to teach near there.  We drove past a pet store where one of my high school students, David, had worked.  He made the mistake of telling me he worked there.  He had 18 summer reading sessions scheduled with me.  He came the first week but then he didn't come the second week.  I didn't call and leave a message for his mom because he had told me that he always deleted school messages before she got home! After he told me that, I always called his mom at work, she was a prison guard.  I stopped at the pet store and asked to see him.  The manager went and got him out of the back.  He almost dropped dead when he saw me!! I told him that he looked pretty healthy to me so I knew he didn't miss reading because he was sick.  His manager could hear everything I was saying to him so he came over.  He asked me if David had a summer schedule and I told him what it was.  His manager said to him.....if you miss any more summer reading sessions, I will cut your hours!  David wanted to kill me, I think! Anyway, he showed up the next day and said.. "I can't believe you showed up at my work." I always told him I would do that, show up at his house or his work!  I said....you have known me for several years, all through high school, and you really didn't think I would show up at your work??? He said, "on second thought, I am surprised you didn't come the second day I was absent!"  He did come to reading for the rest of the summer.  He really was a very nice and funny guy!  He came back to the high school to visit me after he graduated.  He told me that he told the story of me going to his work  many times!! His friends, who didn't know me thought he was exaggerating or made the story up, but his friends who knew me knew I would've shown up at his job!! David really was a good kid who happened to have a reading disability,  and I wanted to get his reading level as high as I could before he graduated.
After we got home and Olivia ate and relaxed a bit, we had to go to Sephora to get more make-up supplies. I cringe when I see how many supplies go into Olivia's basket.  The bill was close to $500.00!! Last week, we spent $400 at Ulta.  I guess the teachers want the girls to try different brands and different brushes! Dan came with us for the ride.
I am so thankful that Olya is coming home on Thur.!!! I really miss her even though we have seen her for the past two weekends.  Olya only has one exam left.  So far, her final grades are excellent.  She has an A in Speech, an A in Statistics, and a B- in History. Her last exam is Chem.  She has really struggled with Chem.  Her counselor talked her into taking the course.  She got an A  in high school Chem, but college Chem is so much harder. She should have taken BiSci(biology). Olya insisted on taking Chem, I just hope she gets a C. Olya is such a responsible person.  She already called her boss at the bagel shop where she has worked for the last few years and he scheduled her to work this weekend.
