Day 79 of 365 Days of Being Thankful

      
 
           Today I am thankful for this houseplant.  My son-in-law Adam's father gave it to me last year when they came to Olya's graduation party.  The night before we had a surprise birthday party for Renee and Adam.  We told Renee that it was a surprise party for Adam and we didn't tell Adam anything about it.  Renee didn't know that  the party was also for her.  We told Olya about the party.  Olya knew the party was for her, Renee and Adam because she brought her current boyfriend at the time. When we got to the restaurant, Adam's little nieces ran up to him! He was surprised and Renee was surprised that it was for her too!
We had three cakes, one for Renee, one for Adam, and one for Olya.
They all have birthdays in June.  The next day was Olya's high school graduation party! Adam's dad gave me this plant and I was thinking, this thing is going to die because I have a black thumb!  But it is alive and healthy and blooming.  I started to feed it plant food and then it started blooming. My cat loves this plant!  He entertains himself with it.  To the right of the plant is a stool.  He climbs up on the stool and bats at the tall white flower at the top. I looked at the plant one day and thought it was covered in tiny white bugs on the leaves, but then I realized that the tiny white pieces are from the plant's pistils that our cat Nittany keeps batting at. I need to get a new pot for it because it is outgrowing the pot it is in.  I am afraid to touch it because it is doing so well!
 
I love the softness of the white against the dark green leaves.
 


Adam's family
           Last night Priscilla came over with the Sound of Music DVD. I am so thankful for her friendship.  We couldn't get it working so she started acting out the movie for me! Dan and I had really cleaned the DVD area under the TV last week  He held everything up and I Windexed under all the things on the two  glass shelves of the TV stand:  the phone,  the VHS player, the blu ray player, the phone, the internet box, etc.  We were cracking up because we felt like a bad spell had been put on us about trying to watch the Sound of Music! It was our second attempt to watch the movie!  Priscilla washed the DVD but that didn't work. We probably moved or loosened some  of the wires during the deep shelf cleaning.  Dan eventually got the DVD working so we could watch the movie. So we ate popcorn and candy and watched the movie.  The entire late afternoon/evening was so good, the company, the candy, the popcorn and the pizza! Somehow I think the calories don't count when I am with friends, but they do count a lot!!

                 MORE BAT NEWS!!   Yesterday another exterminator came.  The day before the exterminator from Terminix told me that he saw some guano, bat feces, in my attic and they could " fix " my problem for a year contract of $1400.  Today another exterminator came, he was in the attic a long time.  He said he didn't see any guano in my attic.  He didn't think the bats were hidden in the eaves like the Terminix guy thought because of the lack of guano! The second guy told me to find a handyman to close up an opening near my top roof siding and see if that works.  If not, he said they can come back and seal up the house for $795.  I think the Terminix guy just wanted me to sign a contract. Day 6 of Being Thankful

   Today I am thankful for my daughter Olya.  We adopted Olya from Ukraine in 2009.. Olya with her bio relatives Olya with a friend at her home in Ukraine  She was ten and a half years old when we adopted her.  My friend Maggie had found her for me in Ukraine,  She knew I wanted to adopt another girl in the 10-11 year old age range. Olivia was driving me crazy, she always wanted to be doing something. She really wanted a sibling!  I told Dan that we needed to adopt another girl close to Olivia's age so she would have a sibling to grow up with. Dan was fine with it, I think he was excited to go back to Ukraine!   Maggie works for Frontier Horizons, a hosting organization that brings orphans to the U.S. and other countries for a cultural experience. Maggie visits orphanages and selects children for hosting. They try to select children who are available for adoption but that isn't always the case.   It really is a pre-adoption...

Day 175 of 365 Days of Being Thankful

     Today I am thankful for the wonderful day we spent yesterday.  We went to a restaurant to celebrate Renee and Adam's birthday with about 25 people!   Adam's parents and his brother Dan and his girlfriend came.  Renee and Adam and his brothers and wives/girlfriends and parents are all going on a trip to Lebanon in August.  Renee is excited because she has never been there! Walid's family, Adam's father, owns a huge hospital in Lebanon. It was nice to see all of them. Renee married into a lovely family!  After lunch we all went back to Renee and Adam's house for a large party.  I am guessing about 50 people were at the party!  There was so much food.  There were trays and trays of wraps, sandwiches, fruit, and vegetables.  A huge tray of sushi was demolished in an hour!  I am not a sushi lover or liker so I didn't help eat any of that tray!
